wildcard character
символ обобщения (имени файла или каталога), символ подстановки
символ, позволяющий производить в строке подстановку других символов, чтобы в одном запросе осуществлять поиск (копирование, удаление и т. п.) сразу многих файлов. Обычно для этой цели используются символы "*" и "?", причём первый из них заменяет произвольное число других символов, а второй - только один символ.

Nearly all operating systems let you refer to more than one file at once by using wildcards to take advantage of common characters in the filenames. — Почти все операционные системы позволяют благодаря использованию символов подстановки при поиске выбирать сразу несколько файлов, в именах которых имеются общие символы.
